"Which type of Installation do you want?" Problem?

I've installed Vista Beta 2 a while ago. Upgraded to the pre-RC1, was on
vacation for the follow-ups and now I have the latest version, 5728, and when
I try to install it, I keep getting the error, "Upgrade is not available. You
can only upgrade when using XP SP2 or Windows Vista." Well, I'm using Vista
but it's not recognizing it for some reason. The other "upgraded" never had a
problem but this one does.

Does anybody else have this problem or has something happened over the last
3 weeks that I haven't read about yet? Any help would really be appreciated.

Upgrades are only Supported if you are Running: Windows XP Service Pack 2,
Windows Vista Beta 2 (I forgot the Build Number), or Windows Vista RC1
(Build 5600). Upgrades are Not Supported for Build 5536 to 5728.

Re: "Which type of Installation do you want?" Problem?

Are you trying to upgrade x86 to x64 by mistake? Otherwise it is possible
that Setup does not like the effects of the successive upgrades.

Re: "Which type of Installation do you want?" Problem?

Ahh, I see. Dang it ... don't really wanna completely install again. *sighs*
I'll wait it up a bit and see what happens. Thank you for the heads up,
Kevin.

Re: "Which type of Installation do you want?" Problem?

Nope nope. It's x86 all the way. Just as Kevin stated above, can't upgrade
5536 to the newest build. Maybe a future build will allow it, but who knows.
I'm fine where I'm at, though. If I'm bored, I'll format/start over.

I suppose we really do need to take seriously Microsoft's warning that
interim builds (like 5728) may not be upgradeable. My inclination was to
think that was CYA or lawyer-speak :-}

I may just NOT install 5728 on my 64-bit machine where build 5600 is now
(after days of tweaking and bug swatting) running fairly smoothly.

The custom install (clean) of 5728 is fast. Mine was 28 minutes. Of course
it was 3 days getting everything else installed..lol

The purpose of beta testing software is to test it, not to get a stable
running build and use that for normal activities.
