Vista won't recognise DVD's

Hello,

I'm having trouble with getting vista to play my DVD's. It has only
recently started to do this.

When I put a DVD in it tries to read the disk: the mouse get's the
little CD next to it and I can hear the DVD player trying to read the
disk.

Eventually it just gives up and decideds the drive is empty. The drive
does not show as having a disk in it in My Computer.

When I later shut the PC down and restart it (with the DVD still in),
it ask's me to 'boot windows from CD?'

Strangely it is only certain DVD's that this occurs on. The player is
set to Region 2 with four changes left. The DVD's it won't play are all
region two. They seem to be mostly TV series like Plant Earth, Life in
the Undergrowth and Yes Minister.

Further still, if I start up Vista Media Centre and insert a DVD it
will play, after it recognises it and starts to read the disk, I can
sometimes quickly eject the disk and replace it with one it usually
won't play and trick it into playing the disk.

This is a fairly new PC so I'm guessing it's not a hardware problem.

Any help with this strange behaviour would be great!

Thanks
Abbi

Maybe your DVD drive doesn't like BBC discs. ;P

Seriously, if the discs are in good condition, then it is probably the
drive that is at fault, possibly a misaligned laser. To rule out the
discs as being faulty play them on another PC if possible.

Having done that, and if your PC is still under warranty then request a
new drive from your PC supplier.

Good luck.
