| Vista x64 Ultimate SP2, Windows 7 Ultimate x64 | Re: Partitions Hello Roraniel, Creating partitions on a single hard drive basically allows the created partitions to behave as if they were separate hard drives instead of one. This can be handy for dual booting multiple operating systems, or using the other partition for storage or backups other than on the C: partition with Vista incase Vista messes up. Vista comes with a Disk Management feature that allows you to create partitions. This tutorial will help show you how to if needed. Disk Management - Shrink Partition Hope this helps, Shawn Seeing the free partition manager linl promts me to ask a couple basic questions regarding partitions. Internet software in one, e.g., Office Apps in another, Utilities and the like in one. Images and Image Apps; etc etc If it slows things, I haven't noticed it! |

| | RE: Partitions Roraniel One benefit of a partitioned hard drive is that you can keep all the basics such as Windows, program files, applications and such in C drive, and the second drive can be used to keep the data you yourself create. This means that if (when?) you have so many glitches in the system, which happens to many of us, and you then decide you want to "wipe" the drive, you only have to wipe the C drive, leaving the second drive intact. Many computers, certainly all laptops, have a recovery disk enabling you wipe the whole drive, or you can select just to re-create the C drive, leaving the second drive intact. Mind you, I always back up any new data to an external hard drive on a daily basis. This includes a (paid for) application to back up Outlook. The only problem with that point of view is that the value of leaving the second drive intact is only there if you don't have a backup of what's on it. And in my view, having a backup on external media is *far* more important, and valuable, than having the data on a second partition. There can be good reasons for having a second partition, but in my view, this is not one of them. What are the advantages of having partitions? First, understand what a partition is, and realize that you *must* have a least one partition to be able to use the job. To partition is a drive is to create at least one partition (normally called C on it.So I assume that what you meant to ask is "What are the advantages of having more than one partition?" For more information to help you decide how to partition/organize your drive, read this article I recently wrote: "Understanding Disk Partitioning" at http://www.computorcompanion.com/LPMArticle.asp?ID=326 Quote: > 2. | | Re: Partitions Thanks Ken, good article!! I take away from this discussion that unless I have a specific need for additional partitions there is no real advantage AND there is no real Vista performance or integrity advantage either. Quote: > I take away from this discussion that unless I have a specific need for > additional partitions there is no real advantage To me there are basically two situations in which two partitions are a benefit: 1. Multi-booting two operating systems. 2.A backup procedure that backs up data only, since that lets you back up the entire data partition. Quote: > AND there is no real > Vista performance or integrity advantage either. None at all. In fact, there's a (very slight) performance advantage to having only one partition, since it puts everything closer together on the drive, thereby reducing the distance the heads have to travel between files, and therefore the time it takes to move between files.
