Partitions

Ok, so I had Windows XP running on a 160 gig HD. I partitioned 30 gigs of
that for Windows Vista when RC1 came out. So I installed it, then I totally
got rid of XP because it dosent even compare to Vista. But now my problem is
that I have 130 gigs of free space that I cannot add on to my Windows Vista
partition! The error PartitionMagic gives me is
Vista NTFS is version 3.1 and the rest of your 130 gigs in NTFS version 3.0
What can I do to get all my space back?

Although I have never tried it:

Vista's Disk Management plug-in allows you to resize partitions without
destroying the data.

Re: Partitions

Why don't you partition and format the freespace using Vista. Then try to
merge them with PM

Re: Partitions

How do I partition is using Vista? It still gives me the error if I use PM on
Vista. Is there a special program that comes with Vista? And the free space
is not in a partition.
But I think I know what you are saying.
I put all the free space into a partition, then I go to vista right click
the drive and format it? I will try to do that!

Re: Partitions

You can go into disk management (computer management/disk management) in
Vista and create and format your partioning of freespace there. Then see if
PM will merge them when they have the same version of NTFS.

Re: Partitions

Good to hear. As far as I can remember it was the beta2 that was being
referred to a couple of months ago. There were a half dozen or more posts
that stated the same and linked elsewhere. I haven't used the feature.
Thanks for the clarification.

Re: Partitions

According to Brian above, you should be able to use Disk Management in Vista
to incorporate the free space. Let us know your results.

Re: Partitions

Ok, so I went into Disk Managment, and with my free space I created another
partition. Now Partition Magic wont run. It gives an error.
"Partitions Drive Letter could not be found"
I am out of ideas on how to add my HD space...
Do you guys have any clue?

Re: Partitions

If I understand you have a partition with Vista on it and the new partition
following it. Using Disk Management, delete the new volume. Then right
click the Vista volume and select extend volume. Follow the prompts in the
Extend Volume Wizard to add the unallocated space to the Vista volume

Re: Partitions

Yes completely correct! When I try that, it gives me an error. It says the
Vista partition does not have enough space.
"There is not enogh space available on the disk(s) to complete this operation"
Currently on my Vista partition I have 5 gigs free.
That's not enough?
