Vista A2DP

Hi,

I recently bought some Sony DR-BT20NX headphones and now I have a
couple of questions.

I've managed to successfully pair them with my Lenovo T61 laptop and
have connected and got sound through them.

My issue is, the sound is rubbish!
This could be just the way it is, but I have nothing to compare it
with.

So my questions are:
How do I tell if these headphones are using A2DP?
They are compatible with A2DP but from what I've read about A2DP and
it's loss less sound quality I was expecting it to sound better than
this.

More evidence to suggest it's not using A2DP...
I went to the sound dialog in control panel.
Selected my bluetooth headphones - hit properties.
Choose the levels tab and hit balance.
I set 1 to zero and 2 to 100 - thinking this would give me no sound in
1 ear and full sound in the other.

Both headphones still play the sound and both at the same volume.
Clearly this isn't 'stereo' so either I'm not using A2DP or the levels
and balance thing in control panel is for something else?

I'm going to stop now, before my ramblings take over.

Any help or insight would be really appreciated, thanks in advance.

C.

Re: Vista A2DP

Quality help, many thanks Mike!

You actually think Sony make a pair of headphones that are only
compatible with 2 other bluetooth devices? I take you don't work in
product design!

If you look closely at the link you sent me you'll see that the 4
products listed are infact only 2 (with 2 listings each).

I don't know what Sony are doing with their 'Compatible Products' page
but if I could point you to the 'Technical Specifications' page you'll
see that these are just a bluetooth 2.0 device that supports the
following profiles...

- A2DP
- AVRCP
- HFP
- HSP

As a side issue, when I got home last night I managed to pair my
headphones with both my g/f's Sony Ericsson mobile phone and her Sony
Vaio laptop.
On both counts I clearly got a stereo connection with sound quality I
was happy with (pretty good all things considered).

Now clearly, this could be a case of Sony toys playing well with other
Sony toys - but I thought bluetooth was an open standard?

So, to restate my question (all be it a little differently) - has
anyone managed to get:

A T61 running Vista to connect to some bluetooth headphones and giving
stereo quality sound?

Many thanks,

CA.

I think that the item in question has been designed specifically for use on
a small product range and if it works on others, then count yourself lucky..

You need to contact Lenovo support then. Maybe it is a simple as not user
the correct Lenovo audio driver..

Re: Vista A2DP

Mike,

I'm sorry if this is disrespectful - but honestly - I am astonished at
your status as an MVP!

I work in IT and I had (and still do for now) a really high opinion and
level of respect for MVPs - I appreciate how hard you guys work and how
knowledgeable MVPs are.

So I'm just wondering if you've not tried to comment on a subject you
know little about here?

Bluetooth and A2DP are open standards, so if a manufacturer claims to
have a product that is compliant - then it simply has to work with all
other devices compliant to that standard - end of story.

It seems ridiculous that sony would bother to list compatible devices
for these headphones, as there are literally hundreds (if not
thousands).

Anyway, as a quick FYI - I've fixed it finally. So I now have some
bluetooth sony earbuds that work with my gf's mobile phone, my vaio
laptop and now my lenovo t61 - none of which were listed on Sony's
compatible products page!

Maybe it's just my lucky day, but all in all it's a right result! No
more will I strangle myself on my headphone cable when I'm sat at my
desk.

As for how I did it - incase this turns up in someone elses google
results....

I uninstalled any device that mentioned Bluetooth in the device manager
and downloaded and installed the ThinkPad Bluetooth with Enhanced Data
Rate drivers from the Lenovo support site.

Now, if I look in control panel at the Bluetooth Devices, on the
hardware tab I have 2 devices listed.
-Microsoft Bluetooth Enumerator
-ThinkPad Bluetooth with Enhanced Data Rate.

Next I paired my headphones with the laptop - this is pretty straight
forward although the exact details will depend on the headphones you
have.

So, having paired the headphones they appear in the Devices tab in the
same dialog as above (Bluetooth Devices).

Further to this, and this is the bit that tripped me up, if you click
on the Audio tab in that dialog you should see the device listed and the
services/profiles it supports.

I have bluetooth stereo audio and bluetooth hands-free audio.

By default, my device was connected via the hands-free audio.
This profile is basically for your stereotypical (no pun intended -
it's not stereo) hands-free device for a cell phone. It provides mono
sound at 8khz quality. That's fine for a phone conversation - but
utterly rubbish for listening to music - it sounds like your listening
to music down the phone!

The other option, bluetooth stereo audio sounds like it would do the
job. However, initially this didn't work either, it wouldn't connect.

Through trial and error I found that if I turn off the option to
'Connect to a stereo headset only if it supports SCMS-T content
protection' I can connect to my headphones using the stereo profile. I
have no idea what SCMS-T is, I know it's not even an option on the same
dialog on my Vaio, the fact is, it works without it and that's good
enough for me.

Finally, it's worth mentioning that you also have to go to the sound
applet in the control panel and set your headphones as the default
device on the playback tab.

And that's all there is to it - my bluetooth headphones are playing
nicely with my T61 just as I'd expected them to.

I was going on information given on the Sony site initially. I too found
info that suggested going to the Lenovo website, hence my suggestion in the
second post that you do likewise.

Perhaps you should suggest to Sony that they change the info given on their
'compatibility' page instead of complaining at me..
