| | Error 1913. Setup cannot update file I think this is Vista problem but it can also be Office 2003 problem. Here it goes: I'm setting up Office 2003 Pro (open license edition) on Vista Business SP1. The OS has the latest patches installed. While running setup, after choosing Typical Setup selection, I get the following error: Error 1913. Setup cannot update file C:\Windows\system32\mapisvc.inf. Verify that the file exists in your system and that you have sufficient permissions to update it. The only thing that works is Cancel setup which rolls everything back. I can't install Office 2003. I'm using Administrator domain account to install Office 2003. MAPISVC.INF file has the following permissions: 1) TrustedInstaller - Full Control (Inherited From Parent Object) 2) Administrators (machinename\Administrators - Read & Execute (Inherited From Parent Object) 3) SYSTEM - Read & Execute (Inherited From Parent Object) 4) Users (machinename\Users) - Read & Execute (Inherited From C:\Windows\System32\) I have never seen TrustedInstaller group. What is that? How can I find out Administrator is a member of TrustedInstaller group? More importantly, how can I install Office 2003 on Vista machine? |

| | Re: Error 1913. Setup cannot update file Really? It sure sounds like Vista permission problem. I can see why Office setup fails (or any other software setup that attempts to change MAPISVC.INF file). It's because MAPISVC.INF file permission only allows TrustedInstaller Full access to the file. The rest of the users/groups can only Read & Execute. Even Administrator don't have modify permission. That's ridiculous, don't you think? MS managed to tighten security on Vista OS by preventing Administrators from changing system settings. However, viruses/worms still managed to install without a problem.
