| | Severe problems Running Windows Vista Home Premium 32 on a new Dell XPS M1530. Every time I open a folder with videos in I get a message to say that Rundll32 has stopped working. Every time I insert a CD or DVD I get a message to say that COM Surrogate has stopped working. Every time I try and burn a CD via Vista it says that Windows Explorer has stopped working. There's not much I can do in this world. |

| | Re: Severe problems Mick's suggestion to run SFC is the one I'd try first. You can also try these if it does not do the trick. How to Use Startup Repair: (Any of the links provide screen shots) http://www.windowsvista.windowsreins...rtup/index.htm http://www.vistaclues.com/wp-content...r-computer.png You can use the Vista DVD or F8 to the Options Menu to try the bootrec.exe tool switches: How to use the Bootrec.exe tool in the Windows Recovery Environment to troubleshoot and repair startup issues in Windows Vista http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927392 Windows Vista no longer starts, and Startup Repair does not fix problem http://support.microsoft.com/kb/934540 The commands I use are: bootrec /Rebuild BCD bootrec /fixmbr bootrec /Fixboot _________________ They can either be used from a command prompt reached from the Vista DVD or you can F8 to the options menu and select Safe Mode with Command: A description of the Safe Mode Boot options in Windows XP/and Vista http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315222/ Good luck, CH "Cuzman" <cuzGETRID@xxxxxx> wrote in message news:tP6dnU4iLb-H6rLUnZ2dneKdnZydnZ2d@xxxxxx Quote: > > Running Windows Vista Home Premium 32 on a new Dell XPS M1530. > > Every time I open a folder with videos in I get a message to say that > Rundll32 has stopped working. > > Every time I insert a CD or DVD I get a message to say that COM Surrogate > has stopped working. > > Every time I try and burn a CD via Vista it says that Windows Explorer has > stopped working. > > There's not much I can do in this world. |

| | Re: Severe problems I used to get those error messages on Vista Home Premium, and found it was due to a conflict with Nero 7. I switched to the latest Nero and the problem was solved. Since it appears to be related to thumbnail preview of videos, a temporary workaround is to goto Control Panel, Folder Options, View and check the item 'Always show icons, never thumbnails' You will, however lose jpeg preview. |

| Vista Home Premium 32bit | Re: Severe problems I was having the same problem. Not sure whay caused it since I have many MP4's and have been using them in the same directory for months. But suddenly I get the "Windows Explorer Has Stopped Working" message. I went into CMD and tried to isolate the file causing the issue - I copied one MP4 at a time to a new directory and then tried to open that directory using explorer. However Explorer crashes for any file that I copy from that directory! So somehow all the thumbnails for all the files in that directory were corrupted. I did the temporary work-around using control panel as per fat_man_on_a_bicycle suggested and explorer no longer crashes. Thank you for the help. |

| Vista Home Premium 32bit | Re: Severe problems More clues from this thread indicated a bad codec, so I uninstalled "Muvee Reveal" which I had as a 15 day trial (day 2). The problem is now resolved. Explorer can view the files/icons as thumbnails now. Thanks aggain. |
