| Vista Home Premium 32 Bit | Problems with ReadyBoost... help please! Having a problem trying to get ReadyBoost to work. Cache was originally on a USB stick which is now lost. I'm trying to get a new USB stick to work with ReadyBoost, but Vista keeps saying that there's a cache on another device and that it needs to be removed before a new cache can be made. Obviously, since the old USB is long gone, this is quite impossible. I've had no luck trying to reset ReadyBoost on my system so that it can accept a new device for ReadyBoost. Please help! |

How much RAM do you have? In my experience, ReadyBoost is useful only on computers with a small amounts of RAM---512MB to 1GB. And on such computers, the money spent for the thumb drive would be better spent on additional RAM. So in my view, ReadyBoost should be avoided. -- Ken Blake, Microsoft MVP - Windows Desktop Experience Please Reply to the Newsgroup |

Maybe you will find your lost USB stick still plugged into the back of the box. |

| Vista Home Premium 32 Bit | Re: Problems with ReadyBoost... help please! Alpha: The lost USB is not plugged in. I've checked all 4 of my USB slots and my SD card slot... nothing there. Ken: I'm running a laptop with 2 GB RAM. I know that it would be better to upgrade RAM, but thought this would be a good way to go about it with ReadyBoost. Dave: Yes, i've thought about trying to disable ReadyBoost and then re-enabling it again. I've gone here: Control Panel > Performance Information and Tools > Advance Tools > Configure My Windows ReadyBoost device Is this what you meant? Because I can't find the pathway that you've stated. Can you be more specific? Anyways, when i go through the aforementioned, when i click on "Configure My Windows ReadyBoost Device". Nothing happens! System doesn't even try to access anything, and there's no "working" symbol with the mouse cursor either. Last edited by tiranot; 12-01-2008 at 04:21 AM.. Reason: Posted before post was ready |

So to try to find out which one you could do the following: -- start task manager (ctrl-shift-esc) -- from there start Resource Monitor (Button on the Performance Tab) -- Open up the Disk bar to see which processes are doing disk IO -- Click on Write(B/min) to sort it with highest at the top -- If you don't see a file called ReadyBoost.sfcache in the list try opening a big program which you haven't opened for a while (so not prefetched) and then check the list again. Now if you see (say) F:\ReadyBoost.sfcache that would mean that the device which is F: in your "Computer" view is the one acting as a ReadyBoost. |

| Vista Home Premium 32 Bit | Re: Problems with ReadyBoost... help please! Hi Alpha, Sorry for lack of reply until now, i was away. At any rate, I followed your instructions and found this: Image: System PID: 4 File: \device\harddiskvolume1\ReadyBoost.sf.cache Write (b/min): 1,048,576 Again, i have no devices currently connected to my laptop. Is this something, like a remnant of the original cache set for ReadyBoost? I just happened to catch that line by chance, because they seem to come and go, completely at random... but i suppose if i knew more about computers, it wouldn't seem so random to me ![]() Thanks for your help on this! |
