Lost Volume, Network, Power icons from notification area

Vista 64 Ultimate/HP HDX 16 laptop
I can't get them back, right click start button, properties, notification
area, system icons - the three checkboxes are grayed out. Only the clock
checkbox is active... What to do? Thanks, --ch

Try to "kill" explorer.exe process bu pressing ctrl+shift+esc, find explorer.exe and select end process, still don't close Task Manager.
Now go to File menu in Task Manager, select New Tas (Run) and type explorer...press Enter.

Now you should see options un-grayed select them and click OK.Repeat this with selecting and reselecting and then restart PC.

Worked for me

OK, that worked for now, thanks. Is this likely to re-occur often?
