Well, it would appear that the only security risk is that it has no
password and that given the lack of a password, anyone could access
the computer.

Since almost the entirety of what your cite deals with is XP, here's
an official MS article that recommends that one should NOT disable the
guest account:

As with a lot of stuff at MS - it doesn't bear any relation to real life.
They still say you can run XP with 128MB RAM.......no-one has for YEARS.

Microsoft Baseline Security Advisor. If you run that it will tell you the
Guest account is a security risk.

Re: How to prevent installation of software?

I would create an account for her, without admin privileges. UAC will stop
her from installing any software without an admin password.

Also, I like the idea others have suggested, which is to image the entire
drive before she arrives, just to be sure.

Re: How to prevent installation of software?

"They still say you can run XP with 128MB RAM.......no-one has for YEARS"

That is so true. I added ram to my 300MHz laptop a couple of years ago to
boost it from 64MB to 192MB.
I got good at reducing running services. I could get to my desktop with only
32 MB's being used.
Unfortunately it is no longer mobile after the second hinge finally broke
and I am now waiting for the 32nm processors to come out before I upgrade to
a new laptop/netbook/mid.

Re: How to prevent installation of software?

Password existing accounts and screensavers. Create a new account for the
sil and tie it down with parental controls ( start - settings - control
panel). Failing that I recommend investing in a cattle prod or hiding
behind the sofa, pretending you're out when she rings the doorbell.

Re: How to prevent installation of software?

A guest account is an account for users who don't have a permanent account
on your computer. It allows people to use your computer without having
access
to your personal files. People using the guest account can't install
software or
hardware, change settings, or create a password. There is no security risk
associated with using a guest account compared to any other type of account.
In fact, it is more secure than other accounts because of the limitations of
this account.

Can't anyone just say, "NO!", anymore?

Then perhaps you could inform TechNet, the MS Baseline Security advisor, and
all the other links I posted that they are wrong?
