Vista SP1 Windows Update unresponsive

I'm running a fairly new computer that came with Vista SP1 installed.
After a single use of Windows Update, the functionality stopped working.
I recently did a complete reinstall of Vista from CD, and was able to
run Windows Update again, until I received SP1.

Since then, the following occurs - I click on Start>Windows Update. The
Windows Update window opens, but is unresponsive - I can not click on
it, the cursor changes to waiting and the canvas is empty. It stays like
this for at least 7 hours (longest I've left it open). Right clicking on
the item in the task bar does not give a context menu.

I have to manually kill the process via Task Manager to remove the
window.

Any thoughts/advice?

Re: Vista SP1 Windows Update unresponsive

I think Vista still has the SoftwareDistribution folder under windows. (Not at my vista system)

Try deleting this folder, no it will not hurt anything, sounds like WU is broken anyway. And then run windows updates again, if it runs properly, it will recreate this folder.

You may have to disable the Automatic Updates or Windows Update Services.

There are also 4 other services that need to be running for WU to run properly.

I think they are,,,,

Background Intelligence
Crytographic (Something)
Automatic Updates
And I think one more,,,, but I can't be certain at the moment.

Re: Vista SP1 Windows Update unresponsive

Knew there was a folder I should play with.

Deleting that got me Windows Update to at least open. I've disabled
automatic updates and I'm seeing if I can get anything out of it.
Thanks!

Sidenote - I found the WindowsUpdate.log file in my Windows folder
while deleting this... there was activity while it was running, but it
doesn't seem to have any message about why it just hung there.
