Vista - Temp fix for Vista

I've had a few problems installing programs in Vista but that is because the
installations are checking the Windows version and finding it's not
9x/ME/NT/2000/XP/2003, this causes the installations to fail.

I've found a couple temporary fixes, and since I don't know how to edit or
trick the installations yet, this will work. Once this system goes to
release, people might not be so happy when they find out that they might have
to do this but for now since it's a free test this is kind of fun.

First option: Install XP on another partition and dual boot.

Second option: Install XP and all your drivers/software that wasn't
installing in Vista, then upgrade to Vista.

Third option: Either install XP and Vista dual boot, or get on another
computer, either way go into XP and install one of those programs that tracks
registry and hard disk changes, take a snapshot then install the
program/drivers and check the snapshot for changes, make a folder for each
that has the files that were added/modified as well as reg keys. Instead of
an .exe that checks the Windows version for an installation file, hopefully
you'll have everything else you need to install your gear in Vista.

I think that if you're on a dual or multi-boot and you install Vista first
and the older OS second, you could be in for considerable trouble and this
has been well documented here and on most other Vista forums--including
trashing Vista. We've worked to bail out many people who had this happen
for months here.

Try running the installer in XP Compatibility mode.

I installed XP after Vista on separate partitions, it didn't want to let me
boot into Vista after the XP install but I just popped in the RC1 dvd and
booted from the cd, then when the options popped up I chose something
like "Fix startup problems" and rebooted. Very quick, very easy.

Running the installer in XP Compatibility mode hasn't worked yet, I think
what is happening is that the installer decompresses the files and spawns
another install process, and the 2nd install process doesn't get ran in XP
Compatibility mode. I'm talking about the installation for HP Lightscribe
direct disc labeling software, as well as a few others, but I even found
programs made by Microsoft that have this error like Visual Basic 2005
and the Windows Live Toolbar that comes with Windows Live Messenger.

So I looked for a workaround, I'd like to figure out how to trick those
Windows Version checks though, probably a registry setting...
