shut down

It takes about 34 seconds for my Vista 32 bit to shut down.

Is that in the acceptable ballpark.

thanks

No way. It's MUCH too slow.

Trash it and buy a new one.

Re: shut down

Who can say? If you have many programs running when you shut down it can
certainly take that long. If you don't then your system may be shutting
down slowly due to hardware constraints.

As far as I'm concerned, yes, it's absolutely acceptable, and doesn't
represent any sort of problem.

But what's acceptable to me, or to anyone else, shouldn't matter to
you at all. It's like the question "Is $750 a week an acceptable
salary for doing job X?" Different people will have different opinions
on it. You have to make your own decisions about things like these.

Also keep in mind that sometimes it will be doing an upgrade when you shut
down, so will take a different amount of time.

Re: shut down

34 secs, is NOT acceptable. In my case the shut-down took about the same
time! I have a HP laptop with a AMD Turion dual core etc. etc. My problem
was that even the start-up took over a minute. I cut the shut down to about
10 secs. and the start-up to about 30 secs. How? Disabling a lot of
unnecessary services, getting rid of the infamous sidebar (a real memory
hog). removing unnecessary start-up programs, cancelling UAC (which is an
absolute nuisance), editing the registry. That got me down to a more
acceptable start-up and shut-down time. There is still one problem. Each
time, Microsoft Update updates Vista, the shutdown can take for ever, but
with the next shut-down it is gone.
Personal opinion: Vista is not good, and MS should be ashamed of this. MS
has all these highly paid academics sitting in their offices who probably
never think user-oriented (typical for academics), Steve Ballmer is not
interested in users at all - ONLY in making money. I compare Vista with
Windows ME which never really took off. One can only hope that somebody at
MS wakes up.

Your decision of course, but in my view you are worrying about things
(both the startup and shutdown times) that are completely trivial.

Thanks Les, never considered that, but it's a valid and worthwhile point.

I originally asked about this because it seemed to take longer than it did,
but I wasn't sure. I ran all the diagnostic stuff I could find in the
Control Panel, but all checked out O.K.

thanks again everyone, and I'll try not to be nit picker, Ken.

BTW, I've had this box since last June and I'm pleased with both
Vista and MS. After reading about what a terrible OS Vista was, I tried to
get an XP box, but couldn't; I'm glad I couldn't. That is just a personal
opinion from a typical user.

Re: shut down

Ken,

I do not think that start-up and shut down time are TRIVIAL. If it takes
that a long time to start-up and shut-down VISTA, then surely something is
wrong with VISTA. I had even considered to throw it out replacing it with XP
but did not do it because of concerns with drivers. I have a second PC and
wanted to upgrade to VISTA. Thanks God I did not!!! By the way, the start-up
and shut-down time is not the only issue with VISTA, there are more issues
which are countless.
