Vista - Microsoft Sync Center Has Stopped Working...

I've seen a lot of postings about this one, but so far no solution has been
offered that I can find...

Brand-new HP laptop, Vista 64 Ultimate SP1. I'm not syncing to anything.
It happens most occasionally when I'm connected to the net and I close the
cover of the laptop and put it to sleep. On re-opening, I get the message.
It happens more often when I'm VPN'ed into work.

Are there any fixes out there?

If not, I would like to just shut this app off (does not appear to be a
service) - it's in SysWOW64 under mobsync.exe... Would renaming it have any
harmful effects...? I suppose Windows will go looking for it at startup and
give me error messages when it doesn't find it...

Mobsync is a device that syncs portable media devices with your media center and can be disabled using the following tutorial

However there is issues with sleep and hibernate on vista, Disable Hibernate and you may find an improvement.
