WebDAV and Windows Vista

This is a pretty simple question for anyone, as long as they actually know
the answer: Will WebDAV work in Windows Vista? It was functional in beta 2,
but in RC1 build 5600 all of the wevDAV servers I've tried to upload to (both
through windows explorer, mapping a network drive, through dreamweaver,
through IE7, etc) have denied me access or simply not worked at all. I work
for a university whose new course management system relies pretty heavily on
webDAV for resource and file uploads and site management, so this is pretty
important.

RE: WebDAV and Windows Vista

Yes- WebDAV will work on Windows Vista. We are not aware of any issues in
Windows Vista RC1 build 5600 that would cause WebDAV to stop functioning and
not work as expected. Functionality-wise, RC1 build should be as good as
Beta2 build if not better.

You mentioned that you are not able to access your WebDAV resources even
with Internet Explorer. This leads me to believe that you have some network
(perhaps proxy) issue. I can help narrow down your problem if you can let me
know what errors you are getting and perhaps get me network traces of your
problem.

Thanks.

RE: WebDAV and Windows Vista

Hi,
I'm having a similar issue. I just installed Windows Vista RC2. Here's what
I did:
- Under Windows Explorer, I right-click on Computer, and then select 'Add a
Network Location'.
- I click next, and select 'Choose a custom network location', and click
'Next'
- In the 'Specify the location of your website' window, I specify an
appropriate website for a web folder, and click Next
- the following error appears: 'The folder you entered does not appear to be
valid. Please choose another.'
What i also noticed is that there is no place for me to specify my
credentials to my web folder.

Please advise.

RE: WebDAV and Windows Vista

Hi- there was a problem with "Add a Network Location" wizard in RC2 that has
been fixed now (final release will have the fix). In the meanwhile, the
workaround is to do a "net use * <http_location>" from command line
(cmd.exe). Let me know if you need any help with this.

thanks.

RE: WebDAV and Windows Vista

I have just installed Vista Enterprise and I am still unable to use WEBDAV
and still receive the same error: 'The folder you entered does not appear to
be valid. Please choose another.' When trying to add a network location.

When I use IE to go to the same site I have no problems getting there.

Any ideas?

RE: WebDAV and Windows Vista

Hi- can you try and check to see if "net use * <webdav-resource>" works from
command prompt?

thanks.

Re: WebDAV and Windows Vista

here's what happens at the command line:
________________________________________________
C:\Users\Mal>net use x: http://idisk.mac.com/malcat/
Enter the user name for 'idisk.mac.com': malcat
Enter the password for idisk.mac.com:

The network name cannot be found.

Re: WebDAV and Windows Vista

Re WebDAV and Vista (64 bit Ultimate)

I have tried mapping a drive via the "net use" command (see below) and created a valid connection but whilst directory/folder names are displayed in windows explorer, trying to access the content of any listed folder produces an "empty folder" message!

Experiences of other colleagues suggest that Vista is broken. Using WebDAV in Windows XP SP2, however, works just fine!

C:\Users\Nick>net use n: https://netstorage.pwf.cam.ac.uk/webdav
Enter the user name for 'netstorage.pwf.cam.ac.uk': <user>
Enter the password for netstorage.pwf.cam.ac.uk: <password>
The command completed successfully.

Re: WebDAV and Windows Vista

Well it seems the bug has infected Windows XP now!! Windows XP SP2 installed yesterday and about 100 patches. Now https:// does no longer work in Add Network Places!
'The folder you entered does not appear to be valid. Please choose another.'
ftp:// and http:// are accepted https:// is broken!
net use bails out with System error 67.

Re: WebDAV and Windows Vista SOLVED!!

Windows XP will not support secured WebDAV (HTTPS) if Office is not installed.

CONGRATULATIONS MS!! Nice job!
