Have you tried the key in a different computer?

If the USB key is dead then the files are lost.
You cannot get them back from recent item as these are just pointers to the
files in their real locations - in your case on your broken USB drive.
No doubt this will be a learning experience for you to backup your important
data to other media and never trust USB drives for important files that are
not backed up (people loose them, break them or they just fail)

I must admit, I only use my key to move files from one computer to another that is not networked, or to copy photos to them to take around a mates.

Again, try the USB drive in another computer. It could be that the USB
"port" on your computer has gone bad and the key is fine. You can also try
different ports on the same computer.
