Re: Motherboard replacement

If you replace the motherboard with anything other than another HP
motherboard from the same family you won't be able to use the HP Recovery
software anymore.

That computer should be able to handle 8GB as is. Are all your RAM modules
matched? Single sided and double sided RAM modules don't mix.
The problem could also be an out-of spec or defective RAM module (it came
with 3GB right?).

Re: Motherboard replacement

HPO usually offers pre-tattooed motherboards that are direct replacements
for whatever you have.
They are NOT cheap, but are supposed to be plug and play and seldom require
reactivation.
I have installed quite a few on HP/Compaq warranty calls and haven't had to
activate many.

Re: Motherboard replacement

For the OEM recovery disc to work, the BIOS have to be marked (tattooed)
with HP as the manufacturer.
If the board is not 'tattooed' the HP OEM recovery/reinstall disc will not
work.
Most OEMs mark the BIOS with their information and tie the reinstall to
finding that mark in the BIOS.
For years, HP required the Tech to 'tattoo' the board as part of the
replacement process.
But they figured out that not every tech is good at flashing BIOS; and even
if they are, disc failure, drive failure or a corrputed install is more
trouble than having the boards flashed before shipment.
I suspect they also figured out that some techs were using the supplied
software to mark NON HP boards and install OEM software that was not paid
for.
