| | Photo Gallery I upgraded my five-year-old Windows 2000 Pro computer to Vista Home Premium. After struggling configuring the old with the new hardwares for several hours, I finally made Vista HP to work as an upgrade. The only hardware Vista rejected was the dial-up US Robotics Fax/Modem. Vista worked with my old ATI 9600 SE 128 MB AGP video card which then I replaced with a new Asus AH-3650 512 MB AGP video card. The new video card dramatically improved the graphics and I am very pleased with the overall result. I have one problem: The preview of Windows Photo Gallery has a vivid magenta mask . . . but the magenta mask is not present when viewing the image in "slide show." The previews of Abode Album, Windows Paint, and Apple Quick Time do not exhibit the magenta mask of Vista Photo Gallery . . . they all work very well. I already tried re-installing Photo Gallery by downloading a copy of it from Microsoft Live. I use my computer mainly on developing and printing digital pictures for my own enjoyment, so, I would appreciate it very much any help from this newsgroup. Thank you. |

A. The photo viewer in Windows Vista is a color managed environment (it can use a color profile to render a color-accurate representation of your photo). XP and IE (and many other applications) are not color managed. Color management can be a complex topic. It's possible that there is an incorrect color profile embedded in the photo, or perhaps you have an incorrect color profile applied to your display device. Following these instructions may fix the problem: 1. Control Panel->Hardware and Sound->Color Management 2. Select your display device 3. Check the box ?Use my setting for this device? 4. Click Add 5. Choose ?sRGB IEC61966-2.1? (this is the color profile that IE is using) 6. Set it as default. | | Re: Photo Gallery The generic problem with strange colors in Windows Photo Gallery is an improper color profile being used for the display. Open 'Color Management' select your display as the device in question. Un-check the box for 'Use my settings for this device '(or remove the profiles from the list), you may need to reboot (I forget) for the change to take place. If you use your system for professional color work you may need more help on how to set and adjust the color corrections but that is out of my expertise. I reset my default to sRGB IEC61966-2.1 and the magenta mask disappeared without affecting the color of the other picture viewers. |
