I am trying to install RC1 but wether I boot from the DVD or start the DVD
from Windows XP I get a Stop Code 9C. I can put in my Windows XP disk, format
the drive and install Windows XP but not Vista?

Most likely a corrupt disk image, try burning it at a slower speed.

After much trial and error I have found this error is caused during a clean
install with the only drive being SATA. Removing the sata drive and using
PATA drive Vista installs. I could never see or time the "F6" routine to
install SATA drivers and this isn't a problem with XP. After install with
SATA drive active Vista wouldn't activate on line but did via Phone.
