RC1 reboots

Some time back there was a post similar to the problem I am having. Beta2
upgrade to RC1 Everything seems to complete. The final reboot after the
'preparing to run Vista for the first time' the system gets to the initial
screen with the version number 5600 on it then reboots (continuously). Same
in any other mode, safe etc.

As far as I can see there was no resolution to this. Since I just received
the DVD and since testing is far advanced from RC1 there seems to be no
reason to do anything but let it rollback to Beta2 and let the wife use it
to surf the net (don't risk getting spyware on my system that way).

Vista has nice eye candy, but most of my programs didn't install meaning I
have many hundreds of dollars replacement costs (maybe upgrade in some
cases) plus the cost of Vista for little benefit.

Glad to see that you finally got RC1. The 3 main areas that I
remember causing problems with RC1 is Video drivers, modem drivers or an
installed program. I haven't had the problem on any of my systems. The USR
5610B modem hasn't had any conflicts through RC2 and I've stayed with the
out of box Nvidia drivers. If you're upgrading Vista x64 it can be
problematic, the only successful upgrade with Vista x64 was from 5728 to
5744 which isn't supported. With Vista x86 the only problems that I've had
upgrading has been Nero, AV programs, Works 8 and Office 2007, uninstalling
the programs prior to doing an upgrade eliminated all problems. A clean
installation may be necessary to avoid any conflicts. Have a great day John.

Thanks Dennis. I was trying to upgrade x86. Settled for a clean install of
x64 on another drive. Need to find the network drivers so I can get on the
internet when I get a chance. Will remove topomaps, works 8 and avast and
give it another go later. Thanks. Looks like another $100 of programs that
won't work on Vista. I'm down to almost nothing that will work.

If you have a Marvel-Yukon NIC, Mark Anderson posted the following
on 9/18/2006 "I had the same problem but I found a solution that worked for
me. You have to go into device manager and open the properties tab of your
yukon nic card. Then click on advanced...then make sure the IPV4 checksum
offload is 'disabled' then make sure the TCP checksum offload IPV4 is
'disabled' and the UDP checksum offload IPV4 is 'disabled' and you should be
all set."

I've had luck installing programs by right clicking the set-up.exe
and running as administrator. If the program is installed in compatibility
mode, un-installation can be a mess.

I have had the same results. So far nothing I installed with compatibility
mode has worked completely and NONE have been able to be uninstalled. I
know Avast has a compatible version so that's no problem. Works 8 installed
and worked well (what I use) in beta2. Have you reinstalled yours?
Interesting that one by one Microsoft software is becomming incompatible
with Vista. My Reference Library 2006, says it will damage the machine if I
try to install it. What's with that? And of course I have to uninstall the
Microsoft keyboard program and mouse. Only took them a year to catch up
with x64. Thanks for the tip on the nic. Hopefully nVidia will have that
in the chipset driver package I found. I assume ASUS will get Marvel to
come up with drivers. The board may be 2 years old, but it is still being
mfg and sold.

I still have RC1 x86 and x64 installed on my FX51 tower. Even though
Avast is compatible it needs to be un-installed prior to an upgrade. I put
the Works 8 disk in to install but didn't let it auto-run. I opened the
Works disk, right clicked "setup.exe" to run as administrator. A warning box
appeared noting that there were multiple users and there could be a
conflict, I clicked continue, Works 8 installed with no problems and
functions normally in Vista RC1 x64. I normally use Works 6 to view my older
documents. One draw back is that if you install Office 2007, Works will be
unaccessable. The work around for Works 6 was to un-install Works, then
delete the Works folder in program files or program files (x86) then
re-install Works. I haven't tested it yet with Works 8.
http://marvell.com/drivers/search.do lists drivers for Vista x86 and x64 but
I don't know if they'll work with RC1.

An update on Works 8 on Vista RC1 x64. Works 8 installed without any
problems, opening a document caused a compatibility screen to appear, after
clicking continue there were no problems. I then installed Office 2007b2 and
the technical refresh, Works 8 wouldn't function due to a library issue. I
un-installed Works 8 and deleted the Microsoft Works folder in program files
(x86), after re-installing Works 8 the compatibility flag would still
appear, but everything functioned after hitting continue. I downloaded the
update for Works 8, after installation of the update the compatibility flag
no longer appears and everything functions normally. Send me an E-mail, I
may be able to help on other programs between naps since I'm currently on
