| | Boot time Why is it that when Linux boots up and the desktop is on the screen the hard drive stops it's activity, But when Vista boots up and the GUI is up on the screen the hard drive light keeps up high activity for another 5 minutes? -- <<//--------------------\\>> Van Chocstraw Quote: Quote: >>\\--------------------//<< |

| | Re: Boot time After booting into Windows Vista, the indexing service will perform an operation to index files for improved performance. That is why the hard drive indicator light stays on for a short period of time. Linux does not have this sophisticated performance-enhancement feature. My handheld calculator boots pretty fast too. |

Same was true in XP - lot of disk action after login is long through completion. |

| Vista Ultimate X32 | Re: Boot time Beyond the start up of background services and programs, even the little crappy tool bars for IE. Swap File activity could be another reason. |

| | Re: Boot time Windows has a lot of backgroud processes that need to launch when it starts up. Windows only completes the ones necessary to a login session before allowing a user to log in. This allows them to claim a faster boot up time. Windows could wait until all those processes completed loading before presenting the login prompt. Then login would be very fast. -Dan "+Bob+" <nomailplease@xxxxxx> wrote in message news:0frlr4dveev1bjm3mh74hsp85cla81mpmb@xxxxxx Quote: > On Fri, 13 Mar 2009 08:56:02 -0500, Leroy <leroy@xxxxxx> wrote: > Quote: >>After booting into Windows Vista, the indexing service will perform an >>operation to index files for improved performance.
