Hardware Requirements

Is the hardware of my 3-4 year-old pc good enough for Windows Vista?

Processor: Intel(R) Pentium 4 2.4 Ghz
Chipset: Intel(R) 845G Chipset
Grahpics: 64Mb Intel(R) 82845G Graphics Controller
HDD: UATA/100 (1gb/s)
RAM: 760mb (512+256)

I'm very worried about my display card now. It has a very low performance.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Hardware Requirements

Your hardware seem to be good to run Windows Vista... but without aero.

Your graphics controler must support DirectX9 and Pix shader and have at
least 128Mb.

Re: Hardware Requirements

Generally, the computer should run fine as it's above the system
requirements. As Sébastien said, it might not get the Glass working, but
everything else should be fine.

Hardware Requirements more info

Sorry, I left something. It should be a 60GB HDD but there's only about
16-17 GB of free space.

Re: Hardware Requirements more info

The specs are good, I just don't know about graphics, since Windows Vista
requires a minimum of 1 GB dual channel memory for onboard graphics with 512
MBs dedicated to the system. As for the hard disk space, Windows Vista BETA
2 needs a minimum 10.1 GBs, Vista uses about 8 GBs of that, so make sure you
have substantial disk space if you plan on testing it thoroughly with third
party applications installed since those will eat up diskspace too.

Re: Hardware Requirements more info

Does your computer have an AGP slot? If so, get a new video card. (An
FX-5200 or an Ati Radeon 9500 is all you need to get Aero glass.) I
wouldn't worry too much if you're using AGP 4x or 8x. If you don't have an
AGP slot, you could have some problems. While I've heard of some success
stories using a PCI video card that works with Aero Glass, I don't know if
it would actually work. If push comes to shove, you could give it a try if
you don't have an AGP slot, but I don't know if it would actually work or
not.

Re: Hardware Requirements more info

I would find out first if the AGP slot on the board is 4x or 8x, since I
have been told, and 8x card in 4x slot can cause damage.

Re: Hardware Requirements more info

Well... not necessarily. I asked a friend from Hardware Labs to help me get
a suitable video card for Vista (at the time, was build 5308) - and gave me
the following advice:

4x card in a 4x AGP slot works fine.
8x card in a 8x AGP slot works fine.
4x card in an 8x AGP slot works fine - but only runs at 4x because it's the
max. the card will go.
8x card in an 4x AGP slot works fine - but only runs at 4x because it's the
max. the slot will go.

So they will work - but will only go the maximum speed of the actual device
)
Hope this makes sense.
