You can FTP to an IP, a domain, even a windows server name if the network is reasonably configured. FWIW: A domain name is just a pointer to an IP address. You can almost always use a domain name in place of an IP address - at least as long as the host system can translate it for you using an available DNS server. The only places IP's are "required" (generalization) is in network settings for things like DNS servers. For example, your router needs an IP address for the DNS server itself because it can't lookup any names until it know where the server is (catch-22). |
