Vista - Media Player

Media Player

For some reason I cannot now open any wav file with Medic Player. The
shortcut on the start menu does not start Media Player. If I go to the
directory that contains the media player exe files and click on any one of
them (e.go. wmplayer.exe, wmlaunch.exe, wmpshare.exe, morph.exe
etc. ).nothing happens. Also I recently noticed that email containing Power
Point formats do not open.

I don't know if they are related but a couple of weeks ago I down loaded
from the Microsoft site programs for reading the newer versions of Word,
PowerPoint, Excel, etc.

I have tried to find the Media Player software on the Microsoft site
thinking I could reinstall it but all I can find is updates to it. I don't
even know what version of Media Players I have. I am using Vista, with all
current patches.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Marv

That morph.exe shouldn't be there.
If you can uninstall whatever made that, do it.

Then, open an elevated cmd prompt and type
regsvr32 wmp.dll
hit enter.
Should get a message box that it succeeded.
See if that helps/

Thanks for the response. I registered the wmp.dll file successfully and then
attempted to open Media Player as administrator but again nothing
happens.The program does not start.

Any other thoughts?

Re: Media Player

Note that the *XP* DllRegister section you're trying to use in this example
will misregister WMP and break some things. That's not how WMP installs
itself in Vista. =\

There's a KB article on this - look up WMP11.AssocFile.WMA on the support
site and you'll see it. =\

Re: Media Player

What changed before WMP broke?
Does this system have Service Pack 1 installed?
Does "wmplayer.exe" show in the Task Manager "Processes" tab when "Show
processes from all users" is checked?

I've used it.
In Vista.
It didn't break anything.

But, thanks.

If you answer the OP, perhaps we all can learn something :-)

Re: Media Player

It does break things - my code actually, which is why I'm aware of this. =)

This is the article I was referring to:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947541

The reg entries there will unwind about 90% of the damage here. There's
more (you're running an XP code path on a Vista system), but this will fix
up the most noticeable problem which is that progressive download/playback
breaks after you do that. =)

This particular XP code path was never expected to be called upon Vista:
it's been pruned for Windows 7, but if you're going to do it on Vista, the
KB I mentioned is probably the best way to do it.

Cheers,
-Zach

That was interesting.
And maybe useful someday.
Thanks.

But, I have run regsvr32 wmp.dll on my Vista install ( Clicking on WMP to
run was non-responsive).

That was some 2 months ago.
Comparing my reg keys to the ones on that link, they are the same.
Except, where you have WMP11.AssocFile.ASF, I have ASFFile <---that type
example in all instances.

I don't experience any issues.
Or am unaware of them :-) .

I will keep that link though. ;-)

Re: Media Player

Yep, those (and the other keys you mention) are the old XP versions.
They'll break an internal player check and generally disable progressive
download. =)
