It is always better to stop programs from starting with Windows from within
the programs themselves, so look in their Options before changing anything
with msconfig - you're just examining things at this stage. If a program
doesn't offer any way to control startup from its Preferences, then use
msconfig to uncheck the box next to its name, Apply and OK out.

Start Orb>Search box>type: msconfig and when it appears in the Results box
above, right-click and choose "Run as Administrator".

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation,
type the password, or click Continue. Then see what is on the Startup tab.
You don't need to restart immediately, but the next time you do you'll get
a dialog saying you've used the Utility. Usually in Vista this will be
blocked by Windows Defender and you'll need to allow it so you can then
tick the box that says in effect, "don't bother me about this again".

Important - Do not use the System Configuration Utility to stop processes.
Instead, use Services.

Start Orb>Search box>type: services and when it appears in the Results box
above, right-click and choose "Run As Administrator". Confirm elevation as
needed.

The free Autoruns program is very useful for managing your Startup -

Works fine. I use it on Vista. No issues.

Vista comes with Windows Defender.
Open windows Defender, choose "Tools" from the menu.
Then go to the tool "Software Explorer"
There you have the option to review startup programs and 'disable' or 'remove' them from automatic startup.
the disable option will let your re-enable them later if your choose.
Note: This process does not remove the program from your computer.

But it does work. I have disabled or deleted startup programs in both
popular HKLM and HKCU reg keys and the more obvious startup locations.
I've also used it to create new startup keys for CU. I haven't moved
any keys (no need to) so I can't report on that.

Give it a shot. If you can prove that it does something wrong I'd be
interested.

Re: DISABLE PROGS ON STARTUP

MSCONFIG is better to use than any third-party software, Windows Defender or delving into the registry.

All you need to do to access MSCONFIG is to click on the start menu, and type msconfig into the search bar at the bottom, wait a few seconds then press enter on the keyboard.

Click on the services tab and make sure you check the option "hide all Microsoft services" before un-checking any of the services.

Click on the startup tab, also. Be mindful on any antivirus programs listed and do not uncheck them unless you do not want them to launch with Windows, which I highly do not recommend.

If you are insistent on using software to help you, use CCleaner. And I highly recommend staying out of the registry for this. One wrong move or delete and you could corrupt Vista to where you cannot boot into Windows and the only way to fix that is to recovery/reinstall Vista which will wipe out all data.

It came with Vista and there is no option to remove it or turn it off.
You might as well take advantage of it's features rather than just stick your head in the sand.

Check again. It definitely CAN be turned off.

Mine is off (I use Avira's malware protection) and a nice side benefit
is that I no longer get bothered about Defender updates.
