Wondering if XP64 can support the memory availabilty and programs supported
by Vista 64. Thinking of upgrading/downgrading to XP64, but really don't
know enough about it (just don't like Vista!) Open to expertise and advise

If you want to go 64bit, there is far greater support for Vista 64..

I would also say jump to Vista 64, Microsoft have 'mentioned' that new
purchases of Vista can be looking at a free upgrade to Windows 7 on release.
(It is also said to be a lot easier to do an inplace upgrade without wiping
data)

If you want future proof - go Vista.
