| | IE and Firefox Crash, Help please. The other night I come home from work late. I go to check my email and non-sense...but can't. Internet Explorer starts to crash..a lot. So, I found someone to send me Firefox the next day (I couldn't keep IE open long enough to do anything, half the time it didn't even open before the crash msg came up.) Still FF crashes. I don't know what the problem is..or was, it seems to be doing ok right now, first time I've actually been able to keep my browser open long enough to do something..I'm afraid to close it in case it doesn't work again. So..here are the reports, first the IE and then the FF. Thanks in advance to anyone who can help. You might try a system restore to back before when you started having this issue. |

| | Re: IE and Firefox Crash, Help please. I have tried the system restore, each point I restored to could not be completed for some reason. Not quite sure the exact reason, can't remember what it said..basically, it just could not do it. I tried about 4 different restore points. Not sure if there is a certain way to do it or not.. -- JeezasKhrist ------------------------------------------------------------------------ JeezasKhrist's Profile: http://forums.techarena.in/members/89073.htm View this thread: http://forums.techarena.in/vista-help/1159018.htm http://forums.techarena.in |

| | Re: IE and Firefox Crash, Help please. If you got your IE open for some time goto tools and click Manage Addins and disable every plugin with a weird name or from an untrustable source. Restart you IE. I hope it works. -- Vanshaj Daga vanshajdaga2002net@xxxxxx http://www.ak****agroup.co.cc "JeezasKhrist" wrote: Quote: > > I have tried the system restore, each point I restored to could not be > completed for some reason. Yes - from Windows Help: Click the Start button, click All Programs, click Accessories, click System Tools, and then click "Internet Explorer (No Add-ons)". I added the quote marks above for clarity. From Firefox help: click Start, open the All Programs list, and navigate to the Mozilla Firefox folder. In the Mozilla Firefox folder, select Mozilla Firefox (Safe Mode). -- Gene E. | | Re: IE and Firefox Crash, Help please. I downloaded Glary Registry Repair, ran it and repaired my registry errors and such, restarted in safe mode and did it again just to be safe..and then restarted regularly and everything seems to be running fine. Nothing has crashed in two days now. I've also downloaded avast! Antivirus and Ad-Aware. Hopefully this all keeps this from not happening again. Thanks for all your solutions. -- JeezasKhrist ------------------------------------------------------------------------ JeezasKhrist's Profile: http://forums.techarena.in/members/89073.htm View this thread: http://forums.techarena.in/vista-help/1159018.htm http://forums.techarena.in |

| | Re: IE and Firefox Crash, Help please. Pre-installation advice I recommend that you follow the steps below before installing Internet Explorer 7. Some may not agree with my advice, but years of experience have shown this to be best practice... 1. The first thing to do is READ THE RELEASE NOTES. There are known issues and you may save yourself hours of grief if you make sure you are informed before you install IE7. 2. Set a restore point (just in case). 3. Turn off Automatic Updates (believe me, you'll thank me later if you've already installed an IE7 beta or RC build). 4. Disable protective software such as antivirus, antispyware and crash guards. 5. DO NOT TURN OFF YOUR FIREWALL!!! 6. Stay connected to the internet. 7. Shut down all running programmes - that includes Messenger, Windows Defender, and OneCare - don't forget to check the systray icons as well. 8. If you are running ZoneAlarm 6.5, disconnect from the internet, uninstall ZoneAlarm, make sure Windows Firewall is enabled, reconnect to the internet then install IE7. This is because ZoneAlarm was blocking access to the Windows Registry. Yes, you have to uninstall ZoneAlarm. IE7 Gold's installer runs various registry permission checks before installation starts to minimise the risk of aborted/damaged installs, but there is no guarantee that the installer will pick up everything. It is best to ensure that problematic software that may block access to the registry be disabled. If you still see registry permission problems, please check out the advice here: http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/archi...04/739820.aspx 9. HKEY_Current_User\Software\Microsoft\InternetExplorer \InstalledByUser IE7RC1 installations failed if the DWORD was not there, but the installer also deletes the DWORD after installation of RC1 is successfully completed. You won't find it on a standard RC1 installation, but at the same time, the existence of the key is not known to cause a problem. When the missing DWORD caused an installation failure with RC1, all that happened was the install rolled back, you saw the failure window, and a shortcut was dumped on your desktop. So, if you wish, you can try adding the DWORD if you have a mysterious installation failure that you have trouble finding a cause for, but I doubt it will make any difference - it certainly hasn't made a difference on any of the dozens of systems I have worked with. 10. Install Internet Explorer 7. Reboot *twice* before running your new Web browser for the first time. 11. Don't forget to re-enable your antivirus, third party firewall and other protective software now that you're finished. 12. Do not reinstall any version of Microsoft Windows in any way after you install Internet Explorer 7. Do not upgrade Windows in place or upgrade to a new edition. You must uninstall IE7 and reboot twice before attempting to repair, reinstall or upgrade Windows: http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;917964 Note that the uninstall directory is now at c:\windows \ie7\spunist The bug that broke IE6 when a repair install of Windows was completed with IE7 installed has, apparently, been fixed, but it is still strongly recommended that IE7 be uninstalled first.
