| Vista | Installing Windows XP over Vista I have Windows Vista 32 on my computer and i was wondering what i would need to install windows XP over that. I was reading some places that a Windows XP OEM will only work on the computer it came with. is this true? Will i need to buy a retail version of XP to install onto my computer? or will the OEM product work? Any help would be very appreciated. Thanks. |

| | Re: Installing Windows XP over Vista First go to you Computer manufacturer website and look for XP drivers for your specific model. If drivers are available you stand a good chance of installing XP. If drivers are not available give up and learn to work the operating system that you bought and paid for. Why would you want to switch anyways??? Vista is a perfectly capable OS for 90% of the population. That's like going to buy back your old car because you don't like the way the seats feel on the new car.. Now as to OEM or Retail XP. .if you bought (not inherited from a previous system) an OEM version of XP it can be installed providing you format the HD during the install but once installed it can never legally be used on another system. If you bought a Retail XP it can be installed providing you format the HD during the install and if in the future you decide to buy a better system it can also be installed on that newer system providing you erase it from the old system. You notice the part where it says "format the hard drive" .. there is no such thing as "install over" formatting the HD will erase everything on it and you start from scratch...all of those programs that came with your Vista system will be gone. All purchased programs will need to be reinstalled. All warranties offered by the manufacturer of your system will be null and void since you replaced the OS with one that did not come with the system. think about it peter -- If you find a posting or message from me offensive, inappropriate or disruptive, please ignore it. If you dont know how to ignore a posting complain to me and I will be only too happy to demonstrate :-) "GIJewishPenguin" <guest@xxxxxx-email.com> wrote in message news:963c45ca8017df7d3b18f21e75213525@xxxxxx-gateway.com...
