CD/DVD drive shows wrong icon when I place a disc in the drive

I have a problem with the way my CD/DVD drive icons are showing up in the
storage devices window. It seems that my machine is displaying the same icon
regardless of the CD or DVD I put into my DVD drive.

At one time, I put a Windows XP installation CD in my DVD drive, and the
CD/DVD drive icon was replaced by the HP logo. I put another software or
game into my DVD drive and I still got the HP logo as the CD/DVD drive icon.

So I tried emptying all of my Prefetch files from my Prefetch folder, and I
thought I solved the problem when I put the Windows XP CD into the drive and
got the regular Setup icon. But when I put a different CD into the drive,
the same Windows XP Setup icon showed up. And when I right-clicked
'Properties' on the CD/DVD drive Icon, in some cases there is no icon in the
upper-left-hand corner next to the name of the CD.

Is there something I need to fix in my registry, to keep the machine from
displaying the wrong icon (or a stuck icon) whenever I put different CDs or
DVDs into my DVD drive? Or is there a simpler solution?

Re: CD/DVD drive shows wrong icon when I place a disc in the drive

I should add this example to clarify my explanation: I booted into Windows
XP, and placed my Windows Vista and Windows XP installation discs into my DVD
drive, knowing that they both have different SETUP icons. When I had the
WinXP CD in the drive, the DVD icon was replaced by the XP SETUP icon; and
when I put the Vista DVD in the drive, the DVD icon was replaced by the Vista
SETUP icon.

In Vista, when I put either disc in the DVD drive, I get the XP SETUP icon,
even if I have the Vista DVD inside.

For lack of a better way to explain this, it seems that the program that
displays the appropriate icon (in place of the CD/DVD drive icon), for
whatever program I have in the DVD drive, is stuck on whatever icon is in its
cache. As I look at the COMPUTER window in Vista, I see the Vista Setup icon
in the lower left-hand corner, but the CD/DVD drive icon has the XP Setup
icon displayed, and I have a Vista setup disc inside.

The wrong icon is being displayed for the disc that's in the drive. The icon
being displayed, and the setup icon on the disc, are different. Is there any
way to fix this?

What I have in mind is...white out and a box of Crayolas...

What happens if you click refresh?

But my thought was, "what happens if the OP reboots?"

It's not really a different thought, though.

Same icon that corresponds to a different CD appears.
