Office 2000 Premium on Vista

Hi
I'm sorry if this question has been answered before, but there a few too
many headers to look through to find the answer.

I have just bought a couple of new laptops for work both running Vista. I
uninstalled Office 2007 trial version and loaded on my trusty copy of Office
2000 Premium (I custom installed without loading on Outlook as I know this
may cause problems). Everything seems to work OK except Word. It opens, then
hangs, then I get a 'Not Responding' message come up.

I have looked a few other fixes -: Re naming Normal.dot (this does not seem
to appear in any files) and I have changed the default printer (that didn't
work either). I can get word to open if I type in winword.exe /a but I know
this is only a temporary fix.

Has anyone else got any other ideas.

Again. sorry if this one has already been answered

Re: Office 2000 Premium on Vista

This package should install on Vista.
You are not missing anything vital by staying with Office 2000.
In truth outside of those who have very specific formatting or spreadsheet
analysis needs individual users, as opposed to corporate users who
collaborate on documents, can save big bucks using a free office suite.
I would if I could, but I am one of those chained to Word, and now Word 2007
and the Ribbon of Abomination, by highly formatted Word forms.
Have you tried reinstalling Word: presumably some critical file was
corrupted in the original installation process if all the other applications
work.
You may want to clean your installation disc.
Sadly older installation discs can get scratches that make reading key files
difficult. Sometimes that can be overcome by copying the installation files
to your hard drive after cleaning the disc and installing from there.

Re: Office 2000 Premium on Vista

Try posting your Q to a word group
I've not seen any reported problems in the Office groups for Word 2k on
Vista
Presumably you tried Office update after the installation?

BTW the only custom install option you should use, other than not to install
Outlook, is to set a version specific folder for the office installation.

Re: Office 2000 Premium on Vista

Based upon my difficulties with Office 07 and a HP laptop preloaded with
Office 07 and Vista, I'd have to say that
The Office 07 installs & uninstalls leave stuff hanging around in the
registry that can screw up an install of an older version of office.
Seems that there may be common registry entries that need to be cleaned up
before you can install the older versions successfully.
MS did have a clean up utility available after I went thru my hassles.

Re: Office 2000 Premium on Vista

Phil

The reason for this issue is that you did not completely eliminate Office 2007.

Uninstall Office 2000 and go through the following steps before re-installing Office
2000

1st

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928218

2nd

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301

FYI - Office 2K runs fine with the exception of Outlook.

Ever realize that MS hasn't added any real features to office since
before 2000? They just move things around the interface, change a few
icons, and call it new.

Actually, Outlook 03 and 07 have made it possible to have a .pst file
that's much larger than 2000 or XP can handle. Other than that, you're
pretty much on the money.

Now *that's* what I call progress!

It may also explain problems that I had with synching my Pocket PC
before I switched to Vista...
