| vista home premium 32bit | Unable to delete/rename/move folder I have recently changed a folder name to an alt code which shows up as a blank space. It shows up as this without parenthesis.( ) Now that I've done that I can't move the file to anywhere, rename it, and I can't delete too. I right click it and hit delete but no confirmation comes up asking if I want to or not. No message saying it's in use or anything. If I try to rename it it reverts back to the invisible characters. I also can't move the file to anywhere else from my desktop. I've been trying for awhile now can't do anything with it |

| Vista Ultimate X64 | Re: Unable to delete/rename/move folder I had a similar problem not being able to delete a file. Turns out the problem was the file ended in a space. I found this out by doing dir filename and hitting tab to autocomplete the filename. This showed me "filename ". I couldn't rename, delete or move the file. Basically all the windows commands both from the gui and from cmd.exe were unable to access the file. I tried unlocker but being that I was running vista x64 it didn't work. Apparently that program doesn't work on a 64 bit OS. Finally I remembered that windows used to have a short name representation of names that was based on the 8.3 scheme. I did some checking and found that dir /x would show these short names. This shows the files as filxxx.xxx. I was then able to do rd on the folder name displayed and this deleted my folder. |
