Vista - Stand-by mode

I'm trying Vista on two computers. On one of them when I try the stand-by
mode clicking the button on the start menu the system totally stops. All
fans stop, hard disk stops and the power led blinks. It seems that it only
keeps alive the RAM memory. When I press enter key the system starts in a
couple of seconds. It's absolutely great!!!

When I try on a second computer the same action doesn't stops the fans and
system only enters a low power mode. It's not the same as the computer is
more on than off.

Do you know if I have to do some settings on the BIOS to make my other
compuer to behave the same when on stand-by? Why don't work on both
computers? Both has new ASUS main boards so I think they will have the same
capabilities.

isn't this the purpose of stand-by?

It's in the BIOS, i'm not totally sure 'cause i can't look it up now but it
has to do with your suspend type / power mode, i think you should use S1&S3
but there are probably other people over here who can tell it precise and
also the differences.

Yes. But until now I did not found a computer that does a real stand-by like
this. Normally all the fans keeps running and this makes look the computer
on.

I'll try to check my settings. But if someone knows what exactly I have to
change it it will be great to know.

With my mobo (Asus A8N-SLI deluxe) i can choose between S1, S3 and S1+S3.
So somewhere in your BIOS should something like ACPI or power/standby modes
been.
Good luck. Maybe you can also have a look at your mobo manual.

I've readed the article and learned many things about ACPI. Thanks!

When I get home I will check my BIOS settings to see if I can change Sx
modes for stand-by.

Hi Maus,

I've checked my BIOS settings. I can choose S1, S1+S3 and Auto. I've set to
Auto and the systems enters stand-by mode perfect!!! :-)

It was previously set to S1 and this mode doesn't stop most of the elements
on the computer.
