Vista - Have to press 'Close' or 'X' twice to close Windows Explorer windo

Any idea why... and how to resolve?

Thank you for your post.

If everything worked before, a quick solution is to restore the system back
to the previous status when the issue didn't occur with System Restore.
(Note: Performing a system restore may cause the loss of the current system
settings; therefore, before doing this, please make sure that the system
restore point is not too old and set a restore point for the current
status.)

Please try the following to check the issue:

1. Do you need to double-click the "X" when closing other windows?

2. Check if you can close the Windows Explorer by pressing "ALT+F4"
normally. Also, try other windows.

3. Restore Folder Options to default:

1) Click Start, type folder options in the Start Search box, and then
click Folder Options in the Programs list.
If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type
the password, or click Continue .
2) On General tab click "Restore Defaults", and click Apply.
3) Go to View tab and click "Restore Defaults", click Apply and then
click OK.

4. Scan your system to make sure that the system is virus free. Temporarily
disable your anti-virus software to see if this problem is gone.

5. Boot the system to Safe Mode and see if it works. Or, you can perform a
Clean Boot to check the issue:

6. Please run SFC to check if there is any corrupted system file.

Type the following command, and then press ENTER:

sfc /scannow

The sfc /scannow command scans all protected system files and replaces
incorrect versions with correct Microsoft versions.

Thanks for the response.

I've been tolerating the issue for several months now, so System Restore
wasn't an option. Here are the results of the other six suggestions... and
then I'll give you the interesting conclusion.

1. Only Windows Explorer-based windows are affected.
2. Have to do Alt-F4 twice as well.
3. Restored all folder defaults. Still had problem.
4. Scanned system. Had no viruses.
5. Started in Safe Mode. Still did it.
6. Ran sfc/scannow. Still had problem.

And then I opened another window and just stared at it in determined disgust
until I saw my QTTabBar toolbars. This made me wonder if they were somehow
causing the problem, so I turned off those toolbars and... voila, now I'm
closing windows with only one press of the X again.

The sad thing is, I've had that program installed since Christmas last year
and it's never hit me that that could be the problem. So while none of your
suggestions actually solved the problem, I guess they did free my mind from
the assumption that I had a technical problem and, in doing so, freed my mind
to see the more obvious possibilities.

So in a roundabout way... thanks, you still helped solve my problem : )
