Vista - "File Download Security Warning"

"File Download Security Warning"

In the last few days, when I have clicked on certain links, a Window opens
headed "File Download Security Warning".

It says underneath: "Do you want to save this file or find a program online
to open it?" The name of the file is stated, and is said to be of the type
"Unknown Filetype".

Below that there are buttons offering "Find", "Save" and not surprisingly
"Cancel". If you click on "Find" a Window opens headed "Windows File
Association" This says the file is "MIME Type: Application/x-gzip-compressed."

None of this is normal, so I used System Restore to go back three days. This
seems to have cured most of the errant links, but not all. The problem
remains. When you click on a link, you should go to that link, right?

I am in need of help if anyone has a simple way of explaining how to cure
this glitch.

RE: "File Download Security Warning"

I'd like to add my own trouble with that message. I did a search here in this
forum and found some more or less helpful answers for cases where the file in
question came from the inter- or intranet. My problem seems to be a bit
different as the files I want to open is on my own C-drive. The file-type is
a jpg. And under 'From:' it shows the path to my own C-drive (C:\users\...)
When I click on Properties of that jpg-file, I have an option to unblock it.
("Security: This file came from another computer and might be blocked to help
protect this computer.")

How do I get rid of this warning when I want to open a file on my own
harddrive? I can unblock this one file. But I still have hundreds of other
files that I don't want to unblock file by file.

Thank you!

This does not sound like Windows behavior. What web browser are you using?

I suspect you may have a third party software installed that's doing this.

What internet security software do you have installed?

Re: "File Download Security Warning"

Peter: Apologies for not responding sooner. For some reason the newsgroup
system fails to email me when there are replies. I just found what you wrote.
I signally completely failed to find the bit
IE\Properties\Security\downloads. Where do I find it? Anyway, I decided to
uninstall IE8 altogether and the problem immediately disappeared. I thought
you'd like to know. I will keep an eye on this thread in case you can respond
and help me further. I thank you for taking the time to assist me. At least I
know where the problem is. I will now attempt to reinstall IE8.

Re: "File Download Security Warning"

Further to my above note, I reinstalled IE8 and the problem immediately
recurred. So if you get to read this, Peter, please tell me in very simple
English what clicks do I have to do to find the "security\downloads" place. I
can't find it and I have tried.
