Help with Windows Firewall and Base Filtering Engine

Hoping one of you geniuses can help me out.

I'm running 32 bit Vista Ultimate with Service Pack One.

I have a problem that is driving me batty. When I open Windows security center and try to turn on Windows Firewall I get a message stating:

"Windows Security Center can't turn on Windows Firewall."

I attempt to turn on Windows Firewall manually but get the message:

"Windows cannot start the Windows Firewall service."

As per advice I saw on another thread on this forum (i believe) I opened a command prompt as an administrator and ran "SFC /scannow" several times. Each time I get the message:

"Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them."

In the log it looks like two files are corrupted (I have attached the entire log).

They appear to me to be:

2009-06-30 15:55:09, Info CSI 000000ff [SR] Could not reproject corrupted file [ml:520{260},l:46{23}]"\??\C:\Windows\System32"\[l:18{9}]"mscms.dll"; source file in store is also corrupted

and

2009-06-30 15:56:42, Info CSI 00000153 [SR] Could not reproject corrupted file [ml:520{260},l:58{29}]"\??\C:\Windows\System32\en-US"\[l:28{14}]"ikeext.dll.mui"; source file in store is also corrupted
2009-06-30 15:56:44, Info CSI 00000154 Repair results created:

Finally this may be related. When I run services.msc as an administrator and attempt to start the base filtering engine service i get the following error:

Windows could not start the Base Filtering Engine service on Local Computer.

Error 15100: The resource loader failed to find MUI file.

I hope I provided enough info. Just ask for more.

Thanks so much!! Cant wait to get this fixed.

Re: Help with Windows Firewall and Base Filtering Engine

BFE Service is required for the Firewall to start.

Start - All Programs - Accessories - Right Click Command Prompt - run as
Admin

sfc /scannow

Yes I do. I tried to "upgrade" but couldn't... probably because i have SP1. Willing to try again.

That's what I suspected. When I run "sfc /scannow" as an admin I get the message:

"Windows Resource Protection found currupt files but was unable to fix some of them."

I attached the CBS.log

Make sure all your services are set properly. They have interdependency.

http://www.blackviper.com/WinVista/servicecfg.htm

Start - Admin Tools - Services

Or Start - type administrative - Administrative Tools folder - Services

Google your error messages for more.

Thanks, I did this.

When I attempted to start both IKEEXT and Base Filtering Engine services, they gave me two different errors:

Base Filtering Engine gives:

"Error 15100: The resource loader failed to find MUI file."

IKEEXT gives:

"Error 1068: The dependency service or group failed to start."

IKEEXT also says "Failed to Read Description. Error Code: 15100"

"Error 1086: The dependency service or group failed to start."

I googled both the errors but could not find a solution. I'm hoping some experts here can help.

Thanks!!

I do have a Vista disc. Does Startup repair delete all my programs/files?
