| | System Hanging Hi Ive noticed my PC hanging lately over last few weeks, especially at startup. Only Zone Alarm SS is set to load at startup. Im running Vista HP with all MS updates installed. AMD 2.6GHZ Processor, and 4MB of RAM. Ive ran all the usual virus and malware checks and all is clear. Ive checked Event Viewer I see an error every 2 minutes or so. Error message with red exclamation is: ''The Windows Search Service has failed to create the SystemIndex search index. Internal error 1, 0x800700b7, Failed to add Gather Application: Windows>.'' After this warning icon shows error message: ''The Windows Search Service is attempting to remove the old catalog.'' Next another warning icon shows message: ''The Windows Search Service has successfully removed the old catalog.'' Then error message with red exclamation is shown again: ''The Windows Search Service has failed to create the SystemIndex search index. Internal error 1, 0x800700b7, Failed to add Gather Application: Windows>.'' This sequence of messages shows through Event Viewer on an almost minutely cycle. Could this be what is causing the PC to hang? Anyone any thoughts? Thanks Si9" |

With that tool, you can uncheck items to shut them off at startup and then see the effect without removing them permanently. You might find something that is hanging the system. Do you have an connections to shared drives that might be missing or disappearing during use? Quote: > Quote: >Ive checked Event Viewer I see an error every 2 minutes or so. | | Re: System Hanging By Startup I mean once the desktop is displayed, the hanging appears to begin. I'll certainly try Startup Control Panel and report back. I already have disabled the Window Search Service. My inclination is something is trying to start within it causing the hanging, but I've no idea what. | | Re: System Hanging Hi +Bob+ I ran Startup Control Panel and under the HKLM/Run tab only Zone Alarm is listed. Nothing else is listed under the other 5 tabs. Thanks. | | Re: System Hanging Get Autoruns from the Microsoft website. Like startup Control Panel, it tells you what is starting with Windows and gives you a way to modify that. But it is *very* thorough and will give you much more information than you thought possible. OK, much more information than *I* thought possible :-) On Wed, 1 Jul 2009 21:06:36 +0100, si9 wrote: Quote: > Hi +Bob+ > > I ran Startup Control Panel and under the HKLM/Run tab only Zone Alarm is > listed. > > Nothing else is listed under the other 5 tabs. > > Thanks. > > > "si9" <si9@xxxxxx> wrote in message > news:%23RSOQQo%23JHA.5780@xxxxxx Quote: >> By Startup I mean once the desktop is displayed, the hanging appears to >> begin. >> >> I'll certainly try Startup Control Panel and report back. >> >> I already have disabled the Window Search Service. I doubt it though... sounds more like something major in Windows. When you disabled the Windows Search, did you set the service to "disabled" in services.msc? I would also look in service.msc to see what is starting automatically and disable any service you think you don't need. Keep a list in case you need to turn things back on and only do one item at a time to test unless you are very sure of what you are doing. See if you can find something that is hanging you. Also, do you have connections to shared drives ? |
