Virtual PC 2007 with Windows ME - Where to place virtual disk

Am I correct in assuming that, for Windows ME to run in a Virtual PC 2007
window, the Windows ME virtual disk must be located inside a disk partition
that is FAT32? On a test run, I tried to install WinME on a virtual disk in
a folder that was in my normal Vista partition (NTFS), and it didn't get far.
I tried placing the WinME virtual disk inside an FAT32 partition, and
although I didn't finish the installation process, I got that far, with the
WinME instalation screen having popped up and ready for installation.

One other thing: Is it possible to place the WinME virtual disk inside a
logical FAT32 partition? Or must it be a primary partition?

Virtual disk can be anywhere on any format.

No, virtual disk does not need to be located in FAT32 volume. In fact, this
can be a problem because FAT32 can not accomodate files greater than 2GB and
your .vhd file can be greater than 2GB.

How far did you get. I installed some vintage OS's in my VPC 2007 without
any problems.

It doesn't matter. Virtual disk is just a file (.vhd) that can be placed
anywhere. In fact, I would avoid FAT32 volumes regardless of them being on
primary partition, logical drive inside of extended partition, or on a
dynamic volume. The only place I tolerate FAT32 is on USB flash drive.

4GB, not 2GB.

Thanks Manny, I was wrong, but to split hairs, the correct statement is:
4GB minus 2 Bytes

You're off a little bit. FAT32 can handle files up to 4GB. Probably
still smaller then your virtual machine will be.

I thought FAT32 could handle ANYTHING up to 137GB, the limit for an FAT32
hard disk partition.

When I reconfigure my hard drive, I'll test this scenario of yours again and
let you know. First time I tried to install WinME on a virtual drive in
Vista, I didn't get far. I even tried to format the virtual hard drive file
inside my VPC2007 window, and still the WinME setup routine wouldn't start.
It worked when I placed my virtual hard drive in an FAT32 partition.

Sorry, but that's wrong. Two points here:

1. 137GB is *not* the limit for a FAT32 partition. It can support much
larger partitions, but you need two things to support a drive over
that size:

a. A motherboard with a BIOS and controller that supports 48-bit LBA
(or alternatively, an add-in controller card that does).

b. At least SP1 of Windows XP.

2. Regardless of the size of the partition, a file on a FAT32
partition can not be larger than 4GB, as Tim Slattery says above.
