RC2 is crashing always

Hello!

I installed and tested so far Beta 2, RC 1 and RC 2 (all of them as clean
install). All of them made my computer crash within minutes, if Aero is
activated or by just starting a graphic intensive program like Mahjong. The
screen shows some artefacts, then the mouse cursor starts to act jumpy and
after some more seconds the mouse cursor stops completely. A few moments
later the screen gets black, the monitor goes into standby. Sometimes the
computer resets automatically, sometimes it need to resetted manually. I
already updated the NVidia drivers to the latest version (of mid october),
but this doesn't change anything.
I am not sure whether my computer is too old, but the Vista Upgrade advisor
recommends the Ultimate edition for my computer (even though a TV card and
video out seems to be missing...). Anyway a Asus board with 760MPX chipset
and two MP 2800+ processors combined with 1 GB registered RAM and a NVidia
FX5700 seems to me not very special.
I am software developer (with MSDN Premium) and tried to test/adapt my
programs for Vista, but this doesn't seem possible. I filed several bug
reports using the beta reporting tool (and automatically with the build in
error reporting tool). There were no interest in fixing this bug which makes
Vista absolutely unusable. The problem can be recreated reliable within a
minute.
As Microsoft seem not to care to fix this Showstopper, I give up and will
not test any more preview versions. I think as soon SP2 will be released, I
may have a look again...
I must say that I am very disappointed by Vista so far...

Have you upgraded your nVidia driver? The 5700 is old, as far as Vista is
concerned, and there is a much newer driver, 96.85, currently available.
That could be at least part of your problem.

Because you apparently are experiencing problems with what you admit may be a
not-quite-right-for-prime-time system, it's hardly fair to blame it on
Microsoft and Vista. Granted, some of your problems may be caused by Vista
but you don't know that they are necessarily Vista's problems.

Also, why is it that people who have problems, get frustrated, and threaten
never to again test or use Microsoft products think that anyone, least of all
Microsoft, gives a damn?

Thanks. Yes, I tried every NVidia driver directly after release, also the
96.85 version of mid october (as I described in my first post).

I would not have cared if Vista does not run on my system, but as I wrote,
the Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor recommends for my computer the Ultimate
Edition and sees no problems why it should not run with my configuration. If
I would be a user with Windows XP which want to ugrade to Vista final version
in February (or whenever it is available as retail) and use the Upgrade
Advisor, I would buy the Ultimate Version and suddenly see that it does not
run on my computer! Unlike other programs I am not sure whether I get a demo
version for 30 days or 30-days-money-back when Vista does not work on my
system...
So perhaps my main problem is : Why does the Upgrade Advisor does not
recognize that Windows Vista will not be able to run stable on my system? (I
will perhaps buy a new computer next year anyway, but this is a bug and I am
sure Microsoft will not fix it...

I do no threatening, I just said that I am disappointed. I tried to help
Microsoft sending bug reports etc, but there wasn't even a reply. In the
software buisness is a bug which crashes the software after a minute a
showstopper. Such bugs need to be removed with higher priority than all other
bugs. The propability is high that my system is not the only one with such a
similar configuration.

As I am developing software for Windows (and like to do so), I am forced to
use Windows products and so I will in the future. And it was not the first
try I gave Vista, I installed several versions and within several month no
change was discernible. From that I can not agree calling these versions
Release Candidate, it is far from being stable all over (I had to work with
RC2 on a different computer for a limited time). This was not only my
opinion, but all developers co-working on that project had the same opinion...

Forgot:

Why is it not Microsofts problem when a system out of the box (only software
delivered by Microsoft with no 3rd party drivers installed) does not work? In
the end, it is a product of Microsoft. You put in your Vista DVD and install
a Microsoft software that you bought in a store...
Of course they integrate 3rd party drivers from NVidia, ATI, and many more,
but anyway the quality of the drivers contribute to the stability of the
system. Perhaps they should give some more resources to NVidia to help them
making their drivers more failsafe...
