| | Computer keeps going into a standby mode? I have a Sony Vaio. I just bought it a week ago. Model PCG-3G5L At random intervals I get a black screen, like a standby mode, and I have to press the power button or tap a bucnh of keys to turn it back on. I did a virus sweep and I have no viruses. Sleep mode is disabled. It was working FINE yesterday. Help me? |

| | Re: Computer keeps going into a standby mode? Checking Sony's web site I don't find a Model you describe. If it is a laptop how are you using it? If in the lap, don't, as you probably are blocking the air vents on it and causing a thermal shutdown if it boots from the beginning every time it shuts off. Are you using the machine when it shuts down or just letting it sit idle, watching a movie or what exactly is being done when it goes black? Does it have any error messages when you get it back up and running? Does it go though the normal boot process when it is starting back from the "black screen" or does it come back fairly quickly to the desktop? |

| | Re: Computer keeps going into a standby mode? Check if Display Blanking is set to too short period of time. That is one of the many power-control settings, and mine is set to 15 minutes & NONadaptive. NONadaptive means it's always 15 mins, adaptive means it will shut off display in less or more than 15 minutes depening on your habits, if you keep "waking up" your display shortly after 15 mins too often, it will stop blanking for a longer time. Anyways this is likely to be useless technicalities for you, here's an answer though: Four (4) methods: 1) Controlpanel-->Power-->change plan settings-->advanced settings-->display-->check what timeout is set for display before it shuts off, to save power. It maybe too small. 2) Your display graphics card may have its own/separate setting. 3) Your Screensaver could be simple "black/blank" display - check timeout, could be also too short; has nothing todo with similar timeout in Power controls. Rightclick on empy desktop--.personalize-->display-->screen saver, or get there thru Controlpanel. 4) The above could be wrong and something else is blanking your display. You said it's not a true system standby, but just display blanking? |

| | Re: Computer keeps going into a standby mode? I probably don't know..... I thought you had display turn-off timer set to a short period of time, but after your response it looks like something different. |
