Hi all...



Somebody pointed out to me that some of the Vista boxes around here
have the following problem and I was wondering if anybody had a
solution.


A number of Vista SP2 machines have Java Update 13 installed.
However, Update 14 has been out for a while.

If the users -- from admin accounts -- open the Java Control Panel
and check for updates, the control panel tells them that they are
running the current version.

It doesn't matter if they run the "javacpl.exe" application "as
administrator" -- it's the same problem.


The Sun forums indicate a couple other people had similar problems
with older updates (U10-12), but that Sun wasn't able to reproduce.


I've worked around this by manually installing Update 14, but that's
not necessarily the right solution for this.


Does anybody have any suggestions for this? I've uninstalled Java
on one box and reinstalled Update 13, but that still says it's
up-to-date when I run the updater and doesn't show me Update 14.


(And yet, other boxes *have* updated to Update 14, so I don't know
what the difference is between the boxes -- "Programs and Features"
show a listing for Java Update 7 -- probably the first Java installed
-- and then Java Update 14. On the boxes that won't/can't update --
they show Java Update 7 and then Java Update 13.)


Any and all suggestions will be tried.

Following up to my own message...


On the boxes that won't update, I uninstalled the listing for "Java
Update 7" from Programs & Features.

Then I ran "JavaRA" to purge everything "older" than 13.

Then I uninstalled Update 13.

Then I reinstalled Update 13

And it still tells me I'm up-to-date and doesn't give me Update 14 to
install.


On the boxes where it's *not* showing me Update 14, there were listings
in \users\<user>\AppData\LocalLow\Sun\Java

that indicate versions 10-13 were installed (or 11-13 on one box.)


(JavaRA removed this from the one box I tried...)


So I removed Update 13 and manually uninstalled Update 14 (and ran
JavaRA again.)

But I have no idea if this fixes the problem until Update 15 comes out.



I'm still looking for clues as to why Update 13 wasn't giving me any
option to update to 14...


The one box that *did* update to 14, only had jre1.6.0_11 previously.
So maybe 12 or 13 was "bad" and killed this...

Have you considered going to Sun or its forums?

I submitted a bug report to Sun yesterday. I'll see if they get back
to me about it. Maybe it's some known issue and a manual install of
"Update 14" will resolve things going-forward.


I'd just like to know for sure if that's the case...
