....except hiding Hidden+System files, of course.

Delete them. They aren't important.

IIRC, isn't desktop.ini created when you have 'Cache Thumbnails' enabled ?

That's thumbs.db AFAIK.

I tried deleting my desktop.ini file. Vista didn't like that and
recreated the file.

As mentioned previously, this minor problem didn't occur in XP at all.
