Vista RC2 32 shows AMD X2 4200+ as one core

I have a AMD X2 4200 machine that only shows 1 core & 1 logical processor in
system information. Under Device Manager it lists AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core
Processor 4200+ twice. Under task manager in performance tab only shows as
one CPU, under view - cpu history I only have one option "one graph per CPU"
, CPU-Z shows as dual core 4200+ but will not let me select 2nd processor.
This leads me to beleive that Vista RC2 is turning off or not recognizing the
other core. I have Vista on its own partion and dual boot with winxp sp2 and
everything shows up as dual processor under winxp sp2. I have tried right
clicking on processes and see nothing about affinity. Any ideas or help on
this would be most welcome.

I have an X2 3800 and RC2 recognizes both cores under the Task Manager
and Device Manager properly.

Did you do an upgrade or a clean install?

Are you overclocking the CPU?

Bill,
I did a clean install to an empty partion on my C: drive. The install went
with out a hitch even had drivers for the SATA. I have a gigabyte GA-K8NS
Ultra-939 MB. with award bios fully updated. 2 gig ram. Overclock 219 from
stock 200 and shows single core under task manager and under system
information. Under winxp sp2 everything shows as dual core, task manager has
two boxs, one for each core and cpu-z let you look at both processors but not
vista rc2.

That might be the problem - overclocking the system.

Vista, like Windows SP x64 edition, is very finicky about stability.
If the system is not 100% stable, you may experience installation
errors.

There are two things to try.

First, you can check your system stability by running Prime95 on both
cores by setting the CPU affinity. Make sure you run it at least
overnight (8 hours) to make sure it's stable:

http://www.mersenne.org/freesoft.htm
http://mersenne.org/gimps/p95v2414.zip

You can also check your memory to make sure it's good too:

http://www.memtest86.com/

After you check that, and if everything passes ok, then I suggest you
drop the overclock back to the defaults and try installing again.

Just so you know, I have my X2 3800 overclocked to 2500 (25% boost),
and my memory (DDR400) is also pushed over to about DDR 416 (208 MHz).
But I'm running with extra case cooling and a big Zalman 9500 cooler
on the CPU so my system is cool and comfortable, and I tested my
system with Prime95 x2 and Memtest to confirm that it's stable.

Re: Vista RC2 32 shows AMD X2 4200+ as one core

Well I seem to have found the problem. The ACPI was set to single core so I
renamed halmacpi.dll to hal.dll and rebooted and what do you know dual core,
even in the gadgets, task manager, the whole nine yards. BUT! when I do this
it disables my agp ati x850 video card, code 43. From what i can gather this
is an known problem and MS just wants everyone to be on PCI-E <grin> When I
reinstall the original HAl.dll I get my video back. Subscores are processor
4.9 single or double core, Video under single is 5.9, disabled under dual
core is 1. I'll go back to single core and pretty effects. The overclock is
just a slight bump and stable so that is not a problem. I guess I will wait
for RC3 or another year for the kinks to work out or I can afford to build
another box. Thanks for your help.
