Scanning for rootkits

My computer is crashing constantly, and I believe it to be related to my Moby Dick of a rootkit. The reason I call it that is that it showed up one time when I was scanning my system with spysweeper, and before I could remove it, it crashed again. I haven't been able to get it to show up again, and I was trying to see what a good suggestion for a free scanner to hunt it down would be. It showed up as "system registry error - rootkit" or something very similar.

Re: Scanning for rootkits

Back up essential documents, wipe the hard drive completely clean, then
restore from your original media. This is not something you can easily or
certainly clean up after.
