Vista Upgrade to Windows 7

I just purchased a new HP laptop with VISTA. We were told that we would get
a free update to Windows 7 when Windows 7 gets released. We were told to go
to microsoft.com/update to register. When I tried to go to the website, I
received an error that the website did not exist. I went to Microsoft.com
main web page and could find nothing or a link that appeared to get me to the
correct place. How do I go about registering for the upgrade and then in Oct
when Windows 7 becomes available, how do I get the actual upgrade?

I was told a while back when I bought an XP laptop that it was Vista
ready and would get a free upgrade to VIsta. It never happened even
though I jumped through all the hoops with Microsoft and Acer. Acer can
kiss my ass now.
