    Missing Administrative Tools

Today I found that the Administrative Tools folder items are missing. This
    has
happened before but can't remember how to fix it.
Also when I attempt to merge a .reg file back into the registry the file
simply opens with notepad for editing?!? This occurs whether I double click
    the file
or right click and select 'Merge.'

    Any help will be appreciated,
    James

I don't know about your Admin tools problem but your registry
    settings should look like this:

    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\regfile\shell\open
In the right pane: (Default) REG_SZ Mer&ge

    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\regfile\shell\open\command
In the right pane: (Default) REG_SZ regedit.exe "%1"

I printed the registry and will checki into it.
The Admin Tools I finaslly got them retored from a zip file I found after
a search of 'Restore Admininstrative Shorcuts' on the internet.
I believe the Admin problem occurs because I set to 'Display Administrative
    tools
in the All Programs Menu and the Start Menu.'
    When I found

    Re: Missing Administrative Tools

I'll check those registry entrie, thanks.
As far as the Admin Tools.
I found that the folder for the shortcuts are:
    C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Administrative Tools
When I open the registry and navigated to ....Common Administrative Tools it
    showed the Shell Folder as:
    C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Tools\Administrative
    Tools
Tools in my start menu is a folder I created for my 3rd party software
    links. Have no idea
how it shows as the path to Adminstrative Tools in the registry.
I also found that when I have 'Display Administartive Tools on the All
    Programrs menu and
the Start Menu' and I delete the Adminstrative Tools folder from the All
    Progrsams Start menu
checked in the Start Menu properties all the links get deleted but not the
    folder in
    C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Administrative Tools
Although I have no idea why Vist would delte the links but not the folder
    when I delete the
folder in the All Programs menu. I have found a zip file on the internet to
    restore the links
so I pasted them back into the folder and seems to be fine now.

    Re: Missing Administrative Tools

    Sorry for the incomplete response.
The Admin Tools I finally got them restored from a zip file I found after
a search of 'Restore Administrative Shortcuts on the internet.
I believe the Admin problem occurs because I set the 'System administrative
tools' to 'Display on All Programs menu and and the Start Menu.' If I then
    delete the
one in the All Programs Menu all the shortcuts get deleted form the Start
    menu admin tools
and the Control Pane admin tools.

I also found out that the path to the Administrative Tools in the registry
    was:
    C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Tools\Administrative
    Tools
'Tools' is a folder in the start menu I created for my 3rd party software.
    Have no idea how
that got changed, I would never deliberately change that.

As far as the .reg file is concerned the open command had been changed to
    Notepad %1. Again,
I didn't change this, at least knowingly. Changed it back and now works ok.
    I'll export it incase
    it happens again.

I'm curious if anyone else has had this happen on their system and how this
    could possibly happen.

    Thanks,
    James

You printed the *entire* registry? Are you sure? If you did, it would
be a *lot* of paper. How many pages did you get?

    Why did you do this?

    Re: Missing Administrative Tools

No I meant I printed out Dave's reply with the registry entries in it.
I don't have the printer paper for that!
Second, sorry 'bout the extra post(s). Before I sent my post I checked on
    something
and instead of saving to the Drafts folder I simply selected 'Send Later'. I
    didn't realize
it would send the message without my ok.
