VISTA Crashed Again

This is like the third time in two weeks that Vista has crashed.
Several other times, it was a simple "Repair" by DVD, but three times now, a
Full Install was required.

I did detect a virus prior to one of those crashes and was unable to remove,
quarrantine or repair the file with the Trojan virus...if that really
matters.

Re: VISTA Crashed Again

It really matters. Chances are, it was likely the cause of your other two
failures as well.

Are you disabling UAC? You shouldn't, even if it annoys you at times. It may
protect you from yourself.

What AV program are you using? Just because it installs does not mean it is
compatible or reliable under Vista.

Re: VISTA Crashed Again

Enlighten me...

What is UAC? I don't turn anything off as a rule and I even did a full
Format the first two times.
This time I wrote all -0-'s to the drive.

I have a dual boot, using two Hard Disk Drives, with XP Pro on the other
drive.

I am using Avast Home Edition, with the latest Update because the basic
program had known issues with Vista.

I am not sure how the Virus snuck in...possibly when one of the other family
members needed to use my PC
"For just a minute". LOL

Re: VISTA Crashed Again

Hi Gary,

UAC = User Account Control. Frequently, I am seeing people recommending to
disable it to resolve certain issues around installing and configuring
software and system settings (which require administrator privilege).
Generally, this is a bad idea as it also allows malicious code to run
unchecked and unprompted, whereas with the control in place users would be
prompted to acknowledge and allow it to run (and then it'd be the users own
fault if they allowed malware to run).
