Can't assign default program

For some reason Vista stopped using Google Sketchup to open files with the
SKP extension. (It started using Adobe Reader). If I attempt to navigate
to and open the correct program (Open With | Chose Default Program | Browse)
Sketchup is not added to the list of candidate programs (no error
indicated -- just doesn't happen). I can open a file from within the
Sketchup program or drag a file onto the Sketchup desktop icon but can't
open with the correct program by double clicking the SKP file. What am I
missing?

Try uninstalling and reinstalling Sketchup, it should cause it to take back
the file association as part of it's setup process.

The OP said he tried to browse, but I'm not so sure he actually did. I
suspect that he just clicked on the "Other programs" button in the main
window, since he apparently didn't see his entire hard drive :-)

Re: Can't assign default program

Actually I have experienced this problem repeated in Vista and my guess is
that the OP did try browsing and, like me, found his selection did not stick.
When trying to assign a default program, the program I want to assign does
not show up in the suggest list but I am able to browse for it and select it.
However, after confirming the program I want to open with, it does not
update the list. Vista seems to be ignoring the selection. I've tried
enabling the hidden administrator mode and that doesn't seem to help either.

Re: Can't assign default program

I did browse and did locate the executable and "opened" it. Vista ignored
this selection. And yes, I did check the "Always use the selected program
to open this kind of file" box.

Re: Can't assign default program

To me, AccessDenied's post indicates that there's a bug, which is why I
thanked him for the update. It makes it look to me like you can't solve
the problem until (unless) Microsoft does :-(

Re: Can't assign default program

Google just released an update to Sketchup. The installation procedure
added the file association back into the "Open With" recommended programs
list. So I changed the default to Sketchup and everything works fine now.
I agree, though, the refusal of Vista to allow the manual selection of the
correct executable seems like a bug to me.

OK, it wasn't MS, it was Google :-)

ISTR that there's a way to add stuff to Open With, but unless I do some
research, I'm not gonna remember it...
