Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool

The Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool for November is now
available through Windows Update. (It's the first time I've seen the tool
offered for Vista.)

Does anyone use this "tool" ?
I always uncheck it and check " don't ever bother me again" since I run
NAV

Re: Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool

I'd uncheck NAV and tell it to never bother me again.

There's no harm in running the malicious software removal tool any more than
there is to scan your system with two different AV programs.

I always download and install it, but as far as I can tell it has never done anything.

Re: Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool

That was my thinking... if you read it , it's looking for msblaster and
other "old issues".

Dean,Dean - you announced it - do you run it every month ?
Why did you think worthy of posting that ? ( Just asking )

AND it seems to be the same program over and over with same
description - except that they rename it from August to Sept to October
etc. SO if you've never run any app to check for virus or spyware it
might help once , but why every month ?

RE: Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool

Basically, it's a "silent" (unless it finds something) scan offered monthly
from Microsoft, that checks for:

http://www.microsoft.com/security/ma.../families.mspx

More Info:

http://www.microsoft.com/security/ma...e/default.mspx

Hope this helps,
Dean

Re: Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool

I thought is was noteworthy because, at least in my experience, it's the
first time the Tool was offered on Windows Update, and if you read the KB
Article from the "View details" link in the Windows Update window, Vista
isn't mentioned, yet, at least, under "Applies To" in the article. So, on
Vista it was something new, rather than the usual Defender definition/engine
updates and Driver updates, which is all I had ever seen listed.

I just ran it on Vista this morning, and on my XP partition I do run it
every month, because it can't hurt to check, and it's pretty fast. Malicious
Software has never been detected. I don't use an Anti-Virus program, per se.

RE: Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool

How do You run the tool after it is downloaded to your system? Does it run in
the background or do you have to run it manually?

Re: Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool

If you downloaded it through Windows Update, it runs
once in the background.
