Vista - The User Profile Service service failed the logon. User profile service

I get the message:
The User Profile Service service failed the logon. User profile
service
cannot be loaded.
when i try to log in to my admin user.

ive made another user before this happened and so im using this public
profile now.
i see on this forum that others had this problem too.
but in my case trying to follow the help where you rename the .bak
files, the computer wont let me change the file names to start with
(saying the resistry editor cannot rename S-1-5..... error while
renaming key)

also since ive made a public user that i can log in to, i tried to make
this user as the admin, but when i go to change account type and enter
the admin password, nothing happens. nothing. it just goes back to its
screen before. this happens for most but not all of the things that
require an admin password.
so this may be another problem that hopefully someone can help me with

If this can all be solved it would be much appreicated.

You might see if you can do the tutorial after doing STEP ONE in it. If not, then see if the TIP box at the top of the tutorial may be able to help.

The User Profile Service failed the logon. User profile cannot be loaded.
