Yes, cleartype is enabled by default in Vista. If you have a CRT monitor you can disable the setting in the properties for display. Right-click the desktop, Personalize, Window Colour and Appearance, click the line at the bottom "Open classic appearance properties...", Effects button, then turn off cleartype.
